Toast pricing: plans, processing and the real monthly total
Toast pricing has three parts: a software plan, card processing and hardware. Third parties report the Starter Kit plan at US$0 a month and the Point of Sale plan at US$69 a month, with card processing on top at rates Toast does not publish.[2][4] Toast's annual report says nearly every customer must use Toast's own payments, and that contracts generally run 12 to 36 months.[5]
This guide keeps official figures apart from reported ones, adds the onboarding and delivery fees Toast does publish, and works out a real month at three sales volumes, including the point where the US$69 plan starts to pay for itself. Toast's pricing page refused our automated reads, so every plan price here names who reported it.[1] Benvo, which sells a POS for clubs, hotels and hospitality groups, wrote this guide.
The short answer
On reported rates, the US$69 Point of Sale plan costs less than the US$0 Starter Kit once card sales pass about US$11,500 a month, or about US$16,650 to US$18,230 once you count the hardware its lower rate needs. Over a 12 to 36 month contract, the card rate and the term matter far more than the plan fee.[4][2][5]
Toast is good value if
Look harder if
Consider Benvo if
- You run a private members club, hotel outlets or a hospitality group rather than one stand-alone restaurant.
- You prefer a flat module price: POS with Menus is US$448 per venue a month, with no setup fee.[24]
- You want card fees billed by your own KPay, Adyen or Stripe account, with no Benvo markup on top.[25]
Toast plans and prices
| Plan | Monthly fee | Reported in person card rate | Reported by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Kit | US$0 | 3.09% + US$0.15, pay as you go | Katalyst, UpMenu, KORONA POS |
| Point of Sale | US$69 | 2.49% + US$0.15, hardware bought upfront | Katalyst, UpMenu, KORONA POS |
| Build Your Own | Custom quote | Not reported | Katalyst, UpMenu |
Toast costs US$0 a month on the Starter Kit plan or US$69 a month on the Point of Sale plan, as reported in 2026, and Build Your Own is quoted. Card processing comes on top of every plan, and contracts generally run 12 to 36 months. These plan prices are third party, because Toast's official page refused automated reads.[2][3][5][1]

Toast card processing fees: what percentage Toast takes
Toast does not publish its card rates. KORONA POS, citing NerdWallet data updated in August 2026, reports 3.09% + US$0.15 per in person payment on pay as you go, 2.49% + US$0.15 with hardware bought upfront, and 3.50% + US$0.15 for online or keyed payments. Your own agreement may differ, so get the rates in writing.[4]
| Payment type | Plan or setup | Reported rate | Reported by |
|---|---|---|---|
| In person | Starter Kit, pay as you go | 3.09% + US$0.15 | KORONA POS citing NerdWallet, August 2026 |
| In person | Point of Sale, hardware bought upfront | 2.49% + US$0.15 | KORONA POS citing NerdWallet, August 2026 |
| Online or keyed | Any plan | 3.50% + US$0.15 | KORONA POS citing NerdWallet, August 2026 |
In person rates
The two reported in person rates differ by 0.60 of a point, or US$60 on every US$10,000 of card sales. The US$0.15 per payment is the same on both plans, so it never changes which one is cheaper.[4]
Online and keyed payments
Reported at 3.50% + US$0.15, about a point above the Point of Sale in person rate. If you key in phone orders or sell a lot online, model this rate on that share of sales rather than averaging it in.[4]
Do you have to use Toast Payments?
In practice, yes. Toast's 2025 annual report says that, apart from a small subset of customers, businesses cannot subscribe to the platform without also using Toast's payment processing.[5] That is why the card rate, not the plan fee, decides most of what you pay over a contract: in the worked month below, processing is about 96% of the Point of Sale total.

Hardware and Easy Pay
KORONA POS, citing NerdWallet, reports starter hardware kits at US$1,113 to US$1,454 and the Toast Go 3 handheld at US$599, and notes that Toast does not publish device prices.[4] Toast's annual report lists Easy Pay hardware leasing among its financial products.[5] The Go 3 is built for service: drop resistant to 1.5 metres and rated IP65.[14]
Software add-ons
Reported Toast add-on prices a month
Katalyst lists these four add-ons. Taken together at one location they come to US$200 a month, nearly three times the Point of Sale plan fee.[2] Toast Tables, the reservations and waitlist module, has two tiers: up to 25 reservations a month, or unlimited on Toast Tables Plus. Its help page lists no prices, and it does not run on Toast Flex or Toast Go devices.[12]
Onboarding fees (official)
Yes, Toast charges for assisted onboarding and publishes the fees. In the US an on site day costs US$1,000 and a remote day US$800. Work outside standard hours is US$500 a day per resource, cable termination US$50 each, and a late cancellation US$300 a day per resource. Self service onboarding is also offered.[8]
| Onboarding item | Fee |
|---|---|
| On site day | US$1,000 |
| Remote day | US$800 |
| Non standard hours | US$500 a day per resource |
| Cable termination | US$50 each |
| Late cancellation | US$300 a day per resource |
Delivery fees
Toast Delivery Services uses Uber Direct and DoorDash Drive drivers. In the US, fees per order start at US$6.99 through Uber Direct and US$7.49 through DoorDash Drive, with regulatory fees in California, New York City and Seattle and an automatic US$3.99 delivery service charge. DoorDash and Uber Eats marketplace listings are set up separately.[9]
Hotel PMS and partner fees
Charging a meal to a hotel room needs a separate Hotel PMS Integration subscription bought in Toast Shop, and its price is not shown. Toast names 12 PMS systems, including Opera Cloud, Mews, Cloudbeds and Stayntouch, and room charge does not work offline.[10] Other partner integrations connect in Toast Web; Toast says some are free and some carry a fee.[11]
Toast contract terms
Toast's annual report says its subscription contracts generally run 12 to 36 months. Katalyst reports 24 or 36 months as standard, with early termination fees.[5][2] A plan that turns out too expensive can be changed; a long term signed at the wrong card rate is much harder to undo, which is why the rate deserves more attention than the plan.
What a month on Toast really costs
Three restaurants with different card volumes, all on an assumed US$40 average ticket, one location, in person payments only. The volumes are assumptions; the rates are the reported ones above. Add-ons, hardware, Amex surcharges and online payments are left out.
Three restaurants, three volumes
| Card sales a month (assumption) | Card payments at US$40 | Starter Kit plan | Point of Sale plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| US$30,000 | 750 | US$1,039.50 | US$928.50 |
| US$60,000 | 1,500 | US$2,079 | US$1,788 |
| US$120,000 | 3,000 | US$4,158 | US$3,507 |
At US$60,000 the Point of Sale plan is US$69, plus 2.49% of US$60,000 (US$1,494), plus 1,500 payments at US$0.15 (US$225): US$1,788. The Starter Kit plan is 3.09% of US$60,000 (US$1,854) plus the same US$225: US$2,079. Processing is US$1,719 of the US$1,788, about 96%.[4][2]
Starter Kit or Point of Sale: where the line falls
The Point of Sale plan costs US$69 more a month and saves 0.60 of a point on each in person sale. 69 divided by 0.006 is 11,500, so on fees alone the two plans cost the same at US$11,500 of monthly card sales, and above that the Point of Sale plan is cheaper.[4][2]
The lower rate is reported with hardware bought upfront, though. Spread a US$1,113 to US$1,454 kit over 36 months, the longest standard term, and the plan carries US$30.92 to US$40.39 more each month. The line then moves to about US$16,650 to US$18,230 of monthly card sales.[4][5]
The first year, with onboarding
- One location, 12 months, US$720,000 of in person card sales in 18,000 payments at a US$40 average.
- Toast: one remote onboarding day. Point of Sale: the lowest reported starter kit price, bought upfront.
- Benvo: card fees are billed by your own processor at its rate, so they are not counted. Devices are ones you already own.
| Cost | Toast Point of Sale | Toast Starter Kit | Benvo POS and Menus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software, 12 months | $828[2] | $0[2] | $5,376[24] |

| US$0.15 on 18,000 payments | $2,700[4] | $2,700[4] | Your processor's fee[25] |

| Onboarding | $800[8] | $800[8] | $0[26] |
| Estimated total | $23,369 | At least $25,748 | At least $5,376 |
Before processing, the Point of Sale plan's first year is US$828 of plan fees, US$800 of onboarding and US$1,113 to US$1,454 of hardware: US$2,741 to US$3,082. With US$20,628 of card fees at this volume, the year comes to US$23,369 to US$23,710, against at least US$25,748 on the Starter Kit.[2][4][8] Benvo's column leaves out card fees, which are the largest cost on any system at this volume.[25]
The estimator below reads the plan cards at the top of this page. Enter your monthly card sales and it applies the reported in person rates; add US$0.15 for each card payment you take.[4]

Toast pricing compared with other POS systems
The same assumed month, US$60,000 of in person card sales in 1,500 payments, on each vendor's own rate card. Card mix, Amex share and hardware will move every figure.
Monthly total at US$60,000 of card sales
Apart from the Starter Kit, the published or reported options sit within US$31 of each other at this volume. Square Plus is US$49 + US$1,500 + US$225 = US$1,774, against US$1,788 on Toast's Point of Sale plan as reported.[15][4][2] What separates them is the term, who processes the cards and what each extra device or add-on costs, more than the headline month.
Square
Square for Restaurants publishes Free at US$0, Plus at US$49 and Premium at US$149 per location a month, with in person rates of 2.6%, 2.5% and 2.4% + 15 cents. Plus and Premium come with a 30 day free trial and can be cancelled or switched anytime.[15] At US$60,000 Square Free is US$1,785; at US$120,000 Premium becomes the cheapest Square plan at US$3,479, against US$3,507 on Toast's Point of Sale plan as reported.[15][4][2]
SpotOn
SpotOn POS Essentials is US$55 per station a month, month to month, at 2.45% + US$0.15 in person (Amex 3.19% + US$0.15). With two stations at our volume that is US$110 + US$1,470 + US$225 = US$1,805, before implementation costs that SpotOn does not publish.[16] All-In has no monthly fee and includes hardware, but charges 2.79% + US$0.20, which comes to US$1,974 here, with a processing minimum and a two year term. SpotOn does not let venues use their own hardware or tablets.[16]
Lightspeed
Lightspeed Restaurant lists US plans at US$69, US$189 and US$399 a month and does not publish card rates, setup fees or contract length, so Essential can only be shown as at least US$189.[17] Lightspeed Payments is generally required for eligible customers, and existing third-party terminals cannot be used with it.[18][19] More on Lightspeed POS pricing and Toast vs Lightspeed.
Lightspeed also publishes a US transaction fee table: US$400 a month for US$35,000 to US$99,999 of monthly volume, which covers our example. The table does not say when the fee applies; a February 2025 third-party review of the UK product describes it as the fee for using a non integrated processor.[21][22]
Benvo
Benvo POS is US$379 per venue a month and needs Menus and beverage list at US$69, so US$448, billed in US dollars, with no setup fee and a 14 day trial per module. Loyalty is US$149, and POS Connect, for venues that keep another till, is US$59.[24] Each venue chooses KPay, Adyen or Stripe for card payments in person and online, Benvo shows the pros and cons of each, and a paid custom option connects another provider with a compatible API. Card fees are billed by that processor and Benvo adds nothing on top. That makes the month at least US$448 plus your processor's rate, so we do not claim Benvo is cheaper on processing.[25]
Benvo sells no hardware: the POS runs on iPads and phones you own, and kitchen and receipt printers connect through a print bridge on the venue network. It is built for clubs, hotel outlets and groups, with member recognition at the table, charges to a member account and group comparison reports. From the third venue, each venue saves 10%, and from the fifth, 20%.[25][24] See the hotel POS system, the bar POS system and Benvo pricing.
Toast pricing outside the US
- Toast sells in the US, Canada (all ten provinces since its 2026 Quebec launch), the UK, Ireland and Australia. Every price on this page is a US figure.[6][7]
- Toast publishes separate onboarding rates for Canada, Ireland and the UK next to its US table.[8]
- These products are US only: Toast Capital, Toast Payroll and its benefits partners, Tips Manager, the Toast Local app, xtraCHEF, Toast Advertising, Toast Benchmarking, the MyToast app and Toast Checking.[7]
- The Toast Go 3 handheld launched in the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia on 28 April 2026.[14]
- Chat support runs 24/7 in all regions, and Canada, Ireland, the UK and Australia have local phone numbers.[13]
We found no published UK, Irish or Australian plan prices or card rates, so none are shown. Outside the US, ask for a quote in your own currency that lists the plan, each card rate, the hardware, onboarding and the term.

Expert tips: how to lower what you pay Toast
Negotiate on the rate, not only the plan
At US$60,000 of card sales a month, every tenth of a point is worth US$60 a month, or US$720 a year. A 0.10 point cut is worth almost as much as the whole reported US$69 plan fee.[2] Ask for the rate on each card type in writing, including Amex, keyed and online payments, because Toast does not publish them.[4]
Count every add-on per location
Katalyst reports Mobile Order and Pay at US$25 per location; ask whether the other add-ons are priced the same way.[2] If all four were charged per location, the US$200 a month at one site would become US$1,000 across five. Add the Toast Tables tier, the Hotel PMS subscription and any paid partner integrations before comparing totals.[12][10][11]
Diary the renewal date
With terms of 12 to 36 months, the cheapest moment to change anything is the run-up to the end date.[5] Put a reminder in the calendar 90 days ahead, which leaves time to pull a year of card reports, ask for a better rate and price other systems before the notice window closes.

Toast pricing: questions answered
How much does Toast cost per month?
Third parties report US$0 a month for the Starter Kit plan and US$69 a month for the Point of Sale plan, with Build Your Own priced by quote. Card processing comes on top, at reported in person rates of 3.09% or 2.49% + US$0.15. Add-ons, hardware and onboarding are extra, and contracts generally run 12 to 36 months.[2][4][5]
What percentage does Toast take per transaction?
Toast does not publish it. KORONA POS, citing NerdWallet data from August 2026, reports 3.09% + US$0.15 for in person payments on pay as you go, 2.49% + US$0.15 with hardware bought upfront and 3.50% + US$0.15 for online or keyed payments. Your agreement sets your actual rate, so ask for it in writing.[4]
Does Toast charge a setup fee?
Toast publishes fees for assisted onboarding rather than a single setup fee. In the US, an on site day is US$1,000 and a remote day US$800, with US$500 a day per resource outside standard hours, US$50 per cable termination and US$300 a day per resource for late cancellation. Self service onboarding is also offered.[8]
Is there a contract with Toast?
What is cheaper, Square or Toast?
At US$60,000 of in person card sales in 1,500 payments, Square Plus works out at US$1,774 a month on Square's published rates and Toast's Point of Sale plan at US$1,788 on reported rates, so they are close. Square publishes its rates and lets you cancel anytime; Toast contracts run 12 to 36 months.[15][4][5]
Who is the cheapest POS system?
It depends on your volume and term. Toast's Starter Kit (reported), Square Free and SpotOn All-In all have no monthly software fee, but each charges a higher card rate, and All-In carries a two year term. At higher volumes a paid plan with a lower rate usually costs less. Our Toast competitors guide compares more options.[2][15][16]
What is Toast POS' biggest competitor?
The Google AI overviews for "toast competitors" that we reviewed on 4 November 2026 named Square, Clover, SpotOn and Lightspeed first.[23] On price, Square for Restaurants is the closest match, since it also bundles software, its own card processing and hardware.[15] Our Toast competitors, Toast vs Lightspeed and Toast vs Revel pages compare them in detail.
Why is Toast POS so popular?
Toast runs at about 189,000 locations and covers POS, payments, hardware, online ordering, marketing, payroll and supplier invoices from one vendor. It also publishes its onboarding fees, offers 24/7 chat support in every region and connects to 12 named hotel PMS systems for room charges, which suits hotel restaurants.[6][5][8][13][10]

How we compared
Toast's pricing page returned HTTP 403 to our fetch on 4 November 2026 and the Wayback Machine copy could not be reached, so plan prices, card rates and hardware prices come from Katalyst, UpMenu and KORONA POS (citing NerdWallet), each named beside its figure.[1][2][3][4] Onboarding fees, delivery fees, regional availability, the payments requirement and the contract range come from Toast's support pages and its 2025 annual report.[8][9][7][5]
Every total is arithmetic on those rates. Card volumes, the US$40 average ticket, one location and in person payments only are assumptions chosen to show where plans cross, not data from any venue. Amex surcharges, add-ons and taxes are left out unless stated.
